I had to post this because I have never been more moved by a thoughtcatalog article.

It genuinely frustrates me, as a gay man, to see people make all types of assumptions on one’s personality based on whether they’re a “top”, “bottom”, “fem”, “masc”, etc.

I may act confident, but it really does genuinely make me feel extremely insecure that the gay community, one that is already marginalized, places such strong importance on being “straight-acting” and looking fit like a normal boy. As someone who would be considered feminine (though I don’t consider myself to be so) it really hurts my feelings because it makes me feel as though I’m unfit to find a boyfriend because I just don’t fit the expectations.

It’s time for gay people to stop marginalizing ourselves further by creating these arbitrary labels. If you’re not confident enough to admit to being gay, fine then, it’s your prerogative. But, do not perpetuate the inner-alienation of our community because you are uncomfortable with yourself and homosexuality. It’s unfair. If you can’t own up to being gay, don’t drag anyone down with you.
