Also, "pelog" isn't a type of gamelan, it's a scale. Gong kebyar is the ensemble you're describing in your post, and it is tuned in pelog! Oh god, I'm becoming one of ~those~ people on Tumblr. "It's gif, not gif!" There is so much to learn about gamelan, and I hope that you continue to be curious about it after you finish your class!

So, I started taking a World Music Cultures class to make myself more ~~cosmopolitan~~ and it’s been so amazing.

I know this looks like a tl;dr post, but I’m just like fascinated by everything we’ve learned and so I think I’m going to do a world music segment every few days for the next few weeks. I’ll try to describe what we’ve learned as sensitively as possible.

One of the first cultures we’ve looked at is the Bali Indonesian and gamelan music. In short, the idea of threes and “unity in diversity” is perpetuated in their society. The threes is a derivative of the geography which consists of a volcano, land and the sea. Meanwhile, “unity in diversity” is supported through their caste system, the idea that everyone serves a purpose when working together.

Gamelan, or more specifically for us, pelog gamelan (a type of Gamelan played specifically in Bali) utilizes three rhythms with higher-pitched instruments playing a fast tempo, mid-pitched playing mid-tempo and low pitched playing slow tempo.

But, the most fascinating thing to me is this concept of the “ombak”, a shimmering, wave-y like sound texture that literally makes the entire room resonate. It’s created by pairing instruments, gendering them so one if male one is female and then using a slightly lower pitch on the female instrument. When they tune together, it creates a very fluid, expansive texture that sounds like a wave and can be felt through the room.
